If you read that first, books like the Silmarillion will make more sense because you already know the overall structure. It gives you a sense of the massive scope of all that has happened in Tolkien's world. Personally, I recommend Appendix B "The Tale of Years" as a great starting point. They are essentially "laundry lists." Pages of historically important information that didn't get used in the main story. There are looooong, boring pages filled with "So-and-so was king for 50 years and died at the age of 92 so-and-so was king after him and ruled for 22 years and died young so-and-so was king after him.") (You can see this if you read the books of the Old Testament. Just as happened with the Bible and King Arthur, among others.Īlong with accounts of events, ancient historical documents often contain "laundry lists" and other bits of information which didn't fit into the narration but are important bits of history worth preserving. So it gives me the feeling that somewhere, someone took a bunch of historical accounts written by different people and put them together to form one narrative history. (There's a lot more "and Lo the joy of battle shone in his face and he did sing as he slew."-type stuff.)

But a lot of the events around Minas Tirith and the King are written in a much more heroic, "epic" style. Much of the action in the Shire and the adventures of the Hobbits is told in plain language, in sensible Hobbit fashion. You might notice that the LOTR has some changes in the writing style as you go through. Most of those old books turn out to be compilations of stories from different sources cobbled together. Many scholars analyze things like the Arthurian legends and books of the Bible to understand their origins. Tolkien knew a thing or two about "real" ancient texts. Primarily the "Red Book of Westmarch," which contains Bilbo's and Frodo's writings and additional material added by others. I like to imagine that we're reading a trove of ancient texts Professor Tolkien found and translated into English. There are other Tolkien-themed subreddits out there! We're looking at starting a wiki for these common ones. Try searching before posting a new thread: odds are we've already covered some of the "classic" questions ("Who is Tom Bombadil?", "What happened to the Blue Wizards?", "Why couldn't the Eagles just take the Ring?" etc). Please make use of r/TolkienBooks and r/TolkienArt for these. Posts/comments centring entirely on promotion will be removed.
